Hyttekontor – work from nature

Designers’ Saturday
10-11, September 2021

The office has moved into our homes during Covid, creating a new set of challenges and opportunities. Nature for many has been a key to finding a new work-life balance. We explore how this trend impacts the way we work, by intertwining nature into our environments.

Covid for better or worse has brought about change and has taught us to rethink the environments we work in. The office for many has moved into our homes, redefining our need for a good work-life balance.

The hyttekontor (cabin office) has emerged during Covid, as Norwegians try to find a new work-life balance. Some Norwegians started working from their cabins when cities closed down. Others however could not afford this luxury and turned to open spaces. Nature has become a vital ingredient for our well-being in a time filled with isolation and doubt. Novooi explores how we can use this trend going forward to re-invent traditional office spaces, intertwined with nature and our psychic need for connecting with our haptic senses.

The tiny house trend can be used to create an office retreat that allows us to be transported, leaving behind stress, enhancing creativity, deep thought and collaboration. Businesses can create these spaces for their employees that do not have their own hyttekontor. Novooi hopes this exhibition shines light on new perspectives about how and where we work, with a focus on our well-being.

The new hybrid work model is one that embraces guidelines for remote working at home while creating new office hubs for those that live in industrialized apartments. Novooi has turned the micro house “Tind” from Norske Mikrohus into a creative space for collaboration, deep flow and play – filled with new Norwegian design and craft. We hope our hyttekontor can be an inspiration for low carbon footprint work hubs going forward.

"There’s a growing awareness of compact living, minimalism, and sustainability," says David Reiss-Andersen, who co-founded the Oslo based company Norske Mikrohus with his wife Jeanette, the firm’s lead designer. "We want to help provide people with the freedom that comes with living with fewer things, lower costs, lower energy use, and less waste." says David.

This is Novooi’s premier exhibition at DogA and Designers’ Saturday, featuring objects from Anna Maria Øfstedal Eng, All Pine Press, Bergskog, Borås Cotton, Elementa, ESP, Fitjar, Fora Form, Fram Oslo, Heymat, Johanne Birkeland, Karoline Hjorth & Riitta Ikonen, Kontur Forlag, Linda Flø, Naaz Ceramic, Norske Mikrohus, Norsk Dun, Northern, Norwegian Trash, Objekt & Ole Brodersen.

The exhibition is curated by Lillian Ayla Ersoy and Hanna von Bergen, the co-founders of Novooi. Images are photographed by Emma Sukalic & Guro Sommer, GEM Studio.
