Gro Mukta Holter

Gro is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in painting, drawing and graphic art such as lithography and gravure. With a Master of Arts from Oslo National Academy of Arts, Holter has done a number of design projects internationally and nationally, won several awards, and her artwork is featured in her showroom in Oslo and multiple galleries around Norway.

“I moved away from home at a young age to attend art school and was featured in my first exhibition at the age of 14. Shortly lafter, I became curious of where I came from as strangers wondered where I was from and why I looked the way I did with my Norwegian name. This opened up a lot of questions for me, questions that I decided to delve right into and examine.”

Gro follows a figurative and artisanal tradition, but likes to dissolve the motifs with unexpected twists. She changes the obvious and logical, and adds expressive or surrealistic touches. Gro uses consistently strong color, which can give associations to the ancient textile history of the East in combination with visual pattern formations inspired by Japanese woodcuts from the 18th century. “With various visual techniques, I try to create reflections on the recipients' own life experiences.”
