Chess Set made from recycled plastic waste, Brave New Lines

Design Brave New Lines

This chess set is made entirely from recycled waste plastics. With soft tactile forms, it balances a moderate level of detail with well rounded proportions. The pieces are naive interpretations of their origin, so people of all ages may connect intuitively with the character they represent on the board.

The pieces are all made from carefully tested ratios of different waste plastics, including snus boxes, DVD covers and frying oil cannisters. All gathered, injection moulded and finished by hand in Trondheim.

The set is part of Nordic Ocean Watch’s non-profit effort “Plastfabrikken”, which aims to showcase the potential value of plastic waste. They teach schools the ways of waste management and prevention. By the end of these workshops, a full chess set is made and brought back to the attending school, as both a reminder and a lunch break activity.

The MDF board has a natural, toned-down presence, with muted contrast to make the recycled plastic pieces stand out. This also makes it an unobtrusive, natural part of the interior, for when the game is put on hold.
