Bleached birch bowl, Ståle Johan Aklestad

NOK 8,500.00

Maker: Ståle Johan Aklestad

Ståle Johan Aklestad is a woodturner based in Molde and Hjørundfjord. His search for lines found in nature has led to a series of wood products that lies in the intersection between function and art. Each bowl is uniquely and carefully handmade in his workshop in Hjørundfjord.

Birch is natural pale, and perfectly suited for further bleaching. In this bleached series, the point is to reduce distractions, forcing focus to be on the form and lines alone. In this deep bowl from spalted birch, the bark-pockets melts with the form, giving the bowl a different expression as you change your point of view. The high and closed form gives a feeling of secrecy, while the big smile in the bottom gives the secret away. The wood is bleached in several stages, then sealed and lacquered to preserve the bleaching.
